(Opinion) A Plea to the Media: Just the Facts Man
First let me set the stage. I am 62 years old. Old enough to remember Sgt. Joe Friday saying, “just the facts,” about 87 times per episode of “Dragnet”.
As a conservative, people often ask me if I like Donald Trump. I answer with a question. The man or the president? I don’t much care for the man. Not crazy about the tweets and personal attacks. But Donald Trump the president? Love him. He’s been great for the country. That is if you look at, “just the facts.”
The honest truth is that I’m not sure what to think of Donald Trump. Before he was president, Hollywood and the liberals loved him. But as soon as he put an “R” behind his name they hated him. What’s the truth and does it even matter?
It all depends on where you get your news. The same news outlet that claimed Trump was a xenophobe for stopping flights out of China now say he was too slow doing it. The same ones who claimed he was a dictator and needed to be impeached, now criticize him for not taking unilateral action across the country, which he can’t legally do.
The same news outlet that claims the mob protesting the shutting down of the economy was a group of armed thugs who didn’t care about people claims that the mobs burning down cities are peaceful protestors. And the same outlet that claims the armed thugs protesting the shutting down of the economy were peaceful protestors are calling the those protesting social injustice violent, looting mobs who are destroying our cities.
Let me be very clear. What happened to George Floyd was an atrocity and there is no excuse for it. I was disgusted with the officers involved when I watched the video and was happy to learn they were all arrested and charged and will not likely ever see the light of day again. That’s how justice works.
But this thing is getting ridiculous. Really. Families are told that they can’t have funerals for their loved ones or attend church services or have weddings, but hundreds of celebrities can attend a funeral for someone they never met because it’s going to be televised?
One outlet depicts George Floyd as a wonderful human being while another talks about his long rap sheet and time spent in prison. It doesn’t seem that anyone tells both sides of his story. I read his biography. He was an athlete in his younger days. Made some mistakes and went to prison. When he got out of prison, he became involved in church and mentored young men. So, neither outlet is lying. And neither is giving us the whole truth.
Does anybody really care about social injustice or are these just people seizing opportunities? Does a famous athlete really need to issue multiple apologies for saying he will never support disrespecting the flag? Is that really such a bad thing to say?
I remember how excited I was when FOX News first came on the air. Finally, a “fair and balanced” network I could watch and get “just the facts”. My euphoria was short lived when I found they were just the other side of the same coin. “Fair and balanced”? Come on. Have you ever watched “The Five”? 80% of the panel is conservative and 20% liberal. It’s four against one every day. Like the reverse of “The View”.
We need a brand new, unbiased news outlet with no agenda. “Just the facts.”
